Suicide on the Rise

I read an article in today's Straits Times that stated that suicide cases will be on the rise this year. One cannot help but wonder how bad the economy will be at the end of the year. Some of you might have friends that may end up losing their jobs. Or some may even have to wrap up their business. It sure seems like it's gonna be a depressing year for many.

In yesterday's post, I urged you to be a better friend to a person you love. In times of need, we all need someone we can turn to. If a friend one day tells you that he or she is feeling suicidal, don't answer by saying "don't be stupid". A suicidal person is an emotional wreck. Listen to their problems and try to help them find solutions.

Here are suicide warning signs to keep a look out for (information from suicide.org)...
  • Appearing depressed or sad most of the time. (Untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide.)
  • Feeling hopeless.
  • Expressing hopelessness.
  • Withdrawing from family and friends.
  • Sleeping too much or too little.
  • Feeling tired most of the time.
  • Gaining or losing a significant amount of weight.
  • Writing notes or poems about suicide or death.
  • Acting compulsively.
  • Losing interest in most activities.
  • Giving away prized possessions.
  • Writing a will.
  • No sense of humor.
  • Facing a perceived "humiliating" situation.
  • Facing a perceived "failure."
  • Feeling excessive guilt or shame.
  • Acting irrationally.
  • Being preoccupied with death or dying.
  • Behaving recklessly.
  • Irritability
  • Frequently complaining about headaches, stomachaches, etc.
  • Neglecting personal appearance.
  • A dramatic change in personal appearance.
  • A dramatic change in personality.
  • Performing poorly at work or in school.
  • Abusing alcohol or drugs.
  • Inability to concentrate.
Lastly, the Ministry of Health has two hotlines you can call if you need someone to talk to. Sometimes it is better to talk to an anonymous person. You can call the Samaritans of Singapore on their 24hr hotline at 1800 221 4444. Alternately, if you aged between 12 to 25 years old, you can call Touchline at 1800 377 2252.
