The Energy Challenge by E2 Singapore
I grew up in an environment where my parents would go on and on about saving electricity. It used to drive me insane whenever my mother nagged about leaving the lights or fan on when it wasn’t needed. Or worse still, I would head out and forget to turn the air-conditioner off.
Now that I’m paying the bills, I know exactly why she nagged! Let me tell you this. If you don’t already know, electricity bills in Singapore can be extremely expensive if you have the air-conditioner running throughout the day! And if you have a clothes dryer, it’s even worse!!!
So to cut down on the bills, we now use the air-conditioner only at night and we’ve cut down the usage of the clothes dryer. Initially, the dryer would operate for two loads of clothes but I’ve cut it down to one. If you look at the bigger picture, we are saving a tidy sum every year.
Well ladies and gentlemen…Have you heard of E2 Singapore’s Energy Challenge? E2 Singapore is an initiative by the Singapore Government and it hopes to build awareness about climate change and energy efficiency. Visitors to the E2 Singapore website, can learn about the dreadful global warming and find out for yourself what you can do to make a difference. I think we all know by now that we can fight global warming. It’s never too late but WE need to do it together. If you love what we have now, then it’s time to do something about it. Agreed?
Here are some simple tips I found on the E2 Singapore website…
• Use a fan instead of the air-conditioner. You could save up to S$665 a year!
• Switch off home appliances at the power socket. Standby power can account for up to 10% of your home electricity use.
• Switch off the computer completely when not in use for long periods (e.g. more than 30 minutes). Leaving a desktop (300W) on every day for 8 hours (e.g. overnight) will cost about S$15 a month
Besides learning how you can save money and our planet, you could win Best Denki vouchers by playing a simple online game. In the Energy Challenge Online Game, participants will have to walk around a virtual home to turn off appliances, turn down consumption or replace appliances to achieve maximum savings in electricity consumption within the shortest period of time. Yup that’s all you need to do in the fun interactive game. Sounds simple and fun? It is!
