Escaped tiger kills one, injures two at San Francisco zoo

AFP - Wednesday, December 26

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - - A tiger that escaped its cage at the San Francisco Zoo on Tuesday killed one zoo visitor and injured two others before it was shot dead, US media reported.

The tiger was shot while it was fatally attacking a patron, San Francisco Fire Department spokesman Ken Smith told The San Francisco Chronicle.

It was not immediately clear how the tiger escaped. Authorities originally feared that four tigers were on the loose but found that the three others never left their cage, the report said.

The attack happened shortly after the zoo's closing time at a cafe not adjacent to the tiger's cage. There was no immediate word on the condition of the survivors or the identity of the deceased.
