“Real Steel” Movie Review

I have to be honest with you. When I was informed that I would be attending the gala premiere of “Real Steel”, I wasn’t too excited. For starters, I’ve never ever liked movies with robots. Secondly, I ain’t a Hugh Jackman fan. Women are probably going “Is this guy insane??!”.While I didn’t become a Hugh Jackman fan overnight, I have to admit that I absolutely loved Real Steel. It is a fantastic movie with a storyline that struck the heart. I kid you not. I teared up at one point. The line “I want you to fight for me dad” just did it for me.

Real Steel is a gritty, white-knuckle, action ride kinda movie that is set in the near-future where the sport of boxing is fought by robots controlled by humans. As you know by now, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed up fighter who lost his chance at a title after the emergence of 2000 pounds, 8 foot-tall steel boxing robots! Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just about enough money piecing together low-end robots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next.

If you think that’s it to the movie, that is where you’ll be pleasantly mistaken. Dakota Goyo who plays Max in the movie is the gem that makes this movie enjoyable. This kid is just amazing on camera. I am officially a big fan of Dakota! Getting back to the storyline, as Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max to build and train a championship contender. How that came about is hilarious but I shan’t spoil it for you.

The other star of the movie is the robot Atom. Now remember I mentioned I don’t like movies with robots? I take that back. I love Atom. If I could have a robot, it would be Atom. This may sound weird but Atom is funny, adorable and one tough robot. This is coming from a guy that doesn’t like robots. Hah!

If I had my own robot... It’ll have black tribal tattoo designs on the arms right down to it’s legs. It will be red in colour with neon orange eyes. While my robot would be THE robot that whoops robotic butts, it will also be the robot that makes everyone laugh and smile. You know…tough on the outside but a real softie on the inside. Damn I so want a robot now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well for all you lovely people, here is a sneak peek of “Real Steel”…
