You'll Never Walk Alone

Seriously what's up with all the bullshit about the national anthem not being played during the Liverpool and Singapore match?! I love this country and I'm pretty patriotic but was there even a need to play our national anthem?

Look, if Singapore played England in a friendly and they played 'God Save the Queen' and they skipped 'Majulah Singapura' then yeah, that would be pretty messed up. I look at 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as a theme song and not an anthem. After all, it was used in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical and recorded by many artists (Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Jordin Sparks, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones and many more). Even Pink Floyd's Fearless has You'll Never Walk Alone in it!

Not matter what anyone says, nobody went to the Liverpool game to support the Singapore team. Would you pay $88 to watch Singapore play? I know I wouldn't! The fans were there to watch Liverpool play. It's as simple as that. For that one night only, it was all about the Kop. Can you blame them? Some waiting 8 years to watch one of the greatest teams play bola on our soil.

Did our Singapore team actually think that the fans would be supporting them? I have to admit we don't have the most loyal of supporters. But that night wasn't about them. In fact, I think it was more of an honour for the Lions to play against Liverpool. Not just Liverpool but all the other world class teams and clubs that have played here before.

I honestly do not understand what the fuss is all about. If Manchester United play in Singapore again one day, I hope they play 'Glory Glory Man United' over and over again!

What do you think? Should the organizers have played the Singapore national anthem?

  1. You are spot on Boyd! This was not a national event. I don't know what the fuss is all about. Maybe the media just needed a story. Idiots!
