PSP? We had zero-point and spiders...

Hey ya’ll! How’s your weekend coming along? This is a pretty looooong post. It’s dedicated to everyone born in the 70’s and early 80’s. I bet you’re gonna feel old after reading this post!

Well, let’s take a walk down memory lane…

1. You grew up watching He-man, MASK, Transformers, Silver Hawk, and Mickey Mouse. Not to forget, Ninja turtles, My Little Pony and Smurfs too.

2. You grew up brushing your teeth with a plastic mug in Primary school during recess time. You will squat by a drain with all your classmates and brush your teeth with a coloured mug. The teachers would always remind us to brush each side 10 times too.

3. You know what SBC stands for. For the young, it’s Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (Presently called Mediacorp).

4. You pay 40 cents for Chocolate or Strawberry MILK every week in class.

5. You watch a very popular Malay dubbed Japanese drama on RTM1 about schoolgirls who possess powerful skills in volleyball called Meoro Attack.

6. You find your friends with pagers cool in Secondary school!

7. SBS buses used to be non-air conditioned. The bus seats were made of wood with red cushions. The big red bell gives a loud BUZZ! when pressed. TIBS buses has colourful tickets. The conductor would board the bus and check each ticket. After which, he’ll punch a hole in the ticket.

8. Envelopes were given to us to donate to Sharity Elephant every Children’s Day.

9. You've probably heard of a magazine called ‘Young Generation’. You know who 'Vinny' the little vampire and Acai the constable.

10. You were there when they first introduced the MRT here. On that very first ride with your parents, you would kneel on the seat to admire the scenery.

11. Movie tickets used to cost only $3.50.

12. Strawberry ShortCake and Barbie Dolls fascinated girls of all ages. Today, it seems the IPOD and mobile phones have taken over.

13. You learn to laugh like The Count in Sesame Street.

14. You longed to buy tidbits called Kaka (20cents per pack), and Ding Dang (50 cents per box), that had a toy in it and it changes every week. Not forgetting the 15 cents animal crackers and the ring pop, where the lollipop is the diamond on the ring.

15. You watched TV2 (also known as Channel10) cartoons because Channel 5 never had enough cartoons for you.

16. Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Three Investigators, Famous Five and Secret Seven are probably the thickest storybooks you ever thought you have read. Even Sweet Valley High and Malory Towers.

17. KFC used to be a high-class restaurant that serve food in plates and let you use metal forks and knives.

18. Catching was the IN thing and twist was the magic word.

19. Your English workbooks were made of some damn poor quality paper that was smooth and yellow.

20. Water bottles were hung around your neck and a must everywhere you go.

21. Boys loved to play soccer with small plastic balls in the basketball court.

22. Teng-teng, five stones, chapteh, hantam-bola and zero-point were all the rage with the girls and boys too...

23. Science was fun with the balsam and angsana being the most important plants of our lives, guppies and swordtail being the most important fish.

24. Every Children's day and National day you either get pins or pens with 'Happy Children's Day 1993' or dumb files with 'Happy National Day 1994'.

25. We would wear BM2000, BATA, Pallas or Panda (really ah-beng. I wore panda right up to Sec 4) shoes to school every day.

26. Your form teacher taught you Maths, Science and English.

27. Your friends considered you lucky and rich if your parents gave you $3 or more for pocket money everyday.

28. You see Wee Kim Wee's face in the school hall.

29. You freak out when the teacher tells you to line up according to height and hold hands with the corresponding boy or girl.

30. Boys loved to catch fighting spiders. We would cause a racket each time we went out looking for a BU or KANG!

31. Autograph books were loaded with "Best Wishes", "Forget Me Not", and small poems like "Bird fly high, hard to catch. Friend like you, hard to forget".

32. You brought every single book to school, even though there was one thing called the timetable. Your bag would weigh more than yourself and yet you’ll still carry your own bag. The word maid wasn’t common then!

Well, that’s about all I have for this post. If you do have fond memories you wanna share, either leave a comment below or drop me an email at ink@noelboyd.com. Tattooed N’ Hot will be up later today. Have a splendid weekend!

  5. you forgot about "pepsi cola one-two-three"!!! i'd go home with black school shoes everyday!

and if you had one of those pencil boxes that had many compartments, you were cool! we used to pretend these pencil cases could transform into robots or tank cars and fire missiles (erm, pencils actually) from the compartments! hee...

and oh, oh, oh!!! those erasers that had different country flags! we used to play with these in class and the eraser that could 'overlay' another eraser wins!

PSP, GameBoy or whatever gadgets kids have these days could nvr beat the original games we made up then...

  6. yes those pencil boxes. i loved them. cost me a whopping $3.20 at the minimart near my house. and hey, with an allowance of $1 a day and food costing about half of that, $3.20 was too much money. the levels the better! mine had 3 different levels!
